I recently stumbled on to this new, unique compilation while I was reading a blog that I frequent. The compilation is made up of obscure american bands from the late 60's and the 70's with songs inspired by wizards, sorcery, warlords and Dungeons & Dragons! While the bands are American, these tracks are all inspired mostly by British bands of the era. The music on offer here is mostly proto-prog, hard rock and heavier, riff-based psych.
With band names like Gorgon Medusa, Dark Star, Stonehenge and Triton Warrior I think you can imagine what you're in for. Not every track is a winner but there are some great songs to be discovered here by obscure, unknown bands. I really like the first song by a group called Air. It's entitled Twelve O'Clock Satanial and it's a lovely and strange slice of psychedelic prog that has more than a hint of early King Crimson. What drew me to this was that I have a fascination with Dungeons & Dragons since I always wanted to play when I was a kid but alas, none of my friends played so neither did I. I saw a brilliant made for TV movie starring Tom Hanks called Mazes & Monsters when I was a kid as well which was supposed to scare kids away from playing D&D but it just made me want to play more!
