I am currently running Windows XP SP3. I tried running Windows Update through the website, however it hangs with 'Checking for the latest updates for your computer.' I ran Windows Update overnight to see if it would eventually complete.

I read several articles each saying I should manually install a different update. I installed Internet Explorer 8, Service Pack 3,.Net Framework 4.0, Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool, and a random cummulative update for Internet Explorer 8. Also, svchost.exe is constantly eating away at any idle cpu availible. When I run Windows Task Manager, it lists the user name of the svchost.exe process that is eating up my resources as 'SYSTEM.'

Windows Xp Genuine Registry Patch

Trying to fix all these problems using previous forum posts and articles lead me to my current problem, that Windows Genuine Advantage Notification installer stalls (has been about 8 hours since I started running the installer). I attempted to use microsoft's FixIt site, however it tells me that I need to have.Net Frameworke 2.0 or newer installed. As mentioned before, I installed.Net Framework 4.0 as.Net Framework 2.0 is no longer availible. Edit: I used Task Mangager to kill the process. I have no idea what to do from this point. Windows Update still isn't working. I will try to install Windows Genuine Advantage Notification again.

Edit: 03 Jan 2014, still no headway.Microsoft will 'officially' discontinue support for Windows XP in April, but in reality the process began long ago. Mr Coffee Fresh Tea Maker Instructions. Looks like Microsoft has destroy their most stable version of Windows.

This will deactivateWindows XP. Feel free to close Registry Editor at this point. Click on Start and then Run. In the text box in the Run window, type the following command and click OK.%systemroot% system32 oobe msoobe.exe /a; When the Let's activate Windows window appears, choose Yes, I want to. Mar 31, 2015 - However, on occasion, you may receive an error during the activation process. When this happens and you cannot advance past the activation prompt, you can manually register your copy of Windows XP without entering your license key. PC users can activate Windows XP manually in the Registry.

Did you get this figured out? I had the same problem, windows update would cause svchost.exe to run 100% cpu usage. I fixed this by having the service, BITS to be manual not automatic. I was able to download and install about 160 windows updates. I believe I have.Net Framework 4.0. The only remaining update is windows genuine advantage tool which stalls during installation.

This is because it is running processes that brings the cpu usage back to 100% (svchost.exe). I will try to disable the BITS service and manually download this tool from Microsoft website and I will let you know if this works. My solution tested on two machines (R61i and Tosh A100) just couple of days ago: Find the folder with WGAN installation files (something like 92e6f0189ed, often on non C: drive), when it stalls use ProcessExplorer or something similar to find exact location (Task Managed is useless), make a copy of the files, restart computer to safe mode, login as administrator, find the copy and run it you may need to take ownership of the files restart computer and check for updates I managed to fully update both laptops Jac. Your issue is something I believe I recognize likely causes based on the general description, and can be fixed by doing the following which will either fix the problem or will rule out the most likely causes as part of the systematic troubleshooting steps which will follow. Prior to December 23, 2013 the Microsoft Fix it was faulty and its use for troubleshooting an XP machine would often result in a specific registry corruption which would cause a necessary process to cease functioning. After December 23, 2012 the Fix it having the faulty code was revised but the Fix it does not repair the registry of computers which were damaged by its earlier faulty version, and the troubleshooting and repairs must be done manually. The unresponsive windows update site has been a problem growing worse and worse since late summer of 2013 and the typical behavior is a near endless searching for available updates with CPU spiking to 100% if observed in task manager for a svchost process associated with Windows update and a remote procedure call through another dependent process called BITS.

Not recognizing the cause for the apparently non functioning windows update, users would follow the troubleshooting advice and links provided by Microsoft which would take them straight to the faulty Fix it tool which would make matters worse by corrupting the registry so that a simple earlier issue was made much worse. The issue of the the CPU spiking has a simple workaround which can be done by manually downloading and installing the most recent cumulative security update for internet explorer and rebooting the computer before using windows update, and for a computer which is otherwise functioning normally, that is all that is required. However, not being aware of this simple fix people would follow the bad advice of Microsoft linking them to the Fix it tool and using that Fix it would compound the users grief by not fixing the first issue and creating an entirely new issue.
